Forty years after the psychiatry inquiry, social psychiatry still lacks a robust and contemporary theoretical framework. Samuel Thoma approaches the topic from a phenomenological-anthropological perspective and contributes to the renewal of social psychiatric theory and practice. This book contributes to an updated self-understanding of social psychiatry: phenomenology places subjective world experience at the center of analysis, phenomenological psychiatry examines the "madness" of this world, while social psychiatry focuses on a subject-oriented, social understanding of this "madness" as well as its socially oriented therapy. The anthropological perspective on the loss of self-evidence, meaning, and rules in socially shared spaces counters the psychopathologization and stigmatization of the radically different.
