With his book "Insane Asylums. The Sick Speak Out," Frank Fischer made a significant contribution to psychiatric reform (Psychiatric Enquiry) in 1969. Fischer, a Germanist and historian by training, contrasts his experiences as a nursing assistant in five German and two English psychiatric facilities. What he uncovered in these 200 pages shocked the public at the time and prompted a rethinking of everyday practices in psychiatry.
