Those who have been practicing as therapists for a while know: With every client, in every therapy, there is a conflict between the desire for change and the tendency to maintain old habits. This often leads to stagnation, motivational issues, and a lack of readiness to act. This is where the authors come in: From their analysis of the motivational problems in psychotherapy, they derive innovative and effective strategies to enhance motivation. They present in detail two motivation techniques, the one-person role play and the pro and con discussion, which guide clients to make decisions and "energize" them.
