People with severe mental illnesses who require complex treatment still predominantly receive the necessary help in inpatient care. However, successful examples from practice show that almost everything, from crisis intervention to everyday support, can be managed on an outpatient basis. The functional basic model of psychiatric care in the community is consistently oriented towards the individual with mental illness: it is not the existing care structures that dictate the perspective, but rather the needs and requirements of people with severe mental illnesses.
