The author aims to make psychoanalysis future-proof and to relate the method to today's societal needs without compromising its fundamental positions. His thesis is: Psychoanalysis as a science and practice will only survive if it changes. The book highlights where these changes can lead and where psychoanalysis can contribute valuable knowledge and skills. To break the sterility and self-referential nature of psychoanalytic work, Peter Fürstenau proposes the inclusion of solution-oriented short- and medium-term psychotherapies. The concepts interconnect and are compatible with each other. Just as the substantive goals of psychoanalysis must evolve, the educational content in training is also subjected to critical revision. A new curriculum is put forward for discussion.
