Psychology is a young science. Its history begins only in 1879, when Wilhelm Wundt opened the world's first experimental psychology laboratory in Leipzig. But why is the narrative of the founding of the institute so popular? Is it not the case that a distinct theoretical foundation for the birth of a discipline is what is truly constitutive? This book develops alternative perspectives on the genesis of psychology and does not rely on the conventional narrative of a paradigmatic break. Using the debates on the unconscious as an example, it highlights lines of tradition that converge in Wundt's overall conception of psychology. Its establishment is therefore not primarily justified by his pioneering work in experimental psychology. Instead, Wundt's mediating position between the humanities and natural sciences is emphasized and reinterpreted for current academic discussions.
