A central feature of cognitive behavioral therapy is to change dysfunctional and harmful cognitions as well as self-esteem concepts. The earlier this occurs, the better the long-term prognosis. However, many techniques and strategies of cognitive behavioral therapy cannot be applied unchanged to children and adolescents – the therapy must be adapted to be age-appropriate and disorder-specific.
