The psychology that Ouspensky explains in these introductory lectures has existed in one form or another for thousands of years. Unlike modern psychology, it views humans from the perspective of what they can become. Once a person realizes how little control they have over their reactions to external circumstances and internal stimuli, the desire may arise within them to find a way to free themselves from this mechanical way of living. Ouspensky describes how a person must work simultaneously on their knowledge and being in order to achieve inner unity, and why it is very difficult to attain this without the help of a school, even though development depends on one’s own efforts.
