Lloyd was born as the only son of Edward John Boydell Lloyd and Leslie Johnston Fleming. He has been married to Jane Helen Violet Shelford since 1960. He received his education at Eton College and Trinity College, Cambridge. In 1948, he joined the 1st Battalion of the Coldstream Guards, serving there until he was called to the bar at Inner Temple in 1955.
