Since 1987, the Saxon Longitudinal Study has been following an identical group of East Germans on their journey from DDR citizens to federal citizens. This book presents the attitudes and opinions of the participants regarding German reunification and their identity development in detail over time. Although the majority of them welcome German unity, rejoice in the opportunities gained, and continue to advance internal unity, there still exists a dual identity among the participants, who see themselves as federal citizens while also identifying as citizens of the former DDR. The findings of the study are supplemented by contributions from renowned guest authors, who critically contextualize the study's data within the broader framework of East German transformation.
