Attachment research has moved beyond the narrow confines of basic research: Expansions of the mother-child dyad to relationships within the entire family system, from early childhood to the entire lifespan, and from basic research to applications in counseling and therapy characterize the professional development. The opportunity for integrating different therapeutic methods leads to the application of attachment theory, particularly within the health and youth welfare sectors. Theoretical and practice-oriented discussions present and analyze the development of attachment research, new findings, and essential concepts of its application in counseling and therapy for children, adolescents, and parents. The work of English psychoanalyst John Bowlby has shown that attachment relationships provide an existential framework for humans.
