The relationship between feminist and psychoanalytic theory has a rather tumultuous history. Since the 1920s, psychoanalysis was initially embraced affirmatively as an important ally in the liberalization of female and early childhood sexuality. However, during the second wave of the women's movement, it increasingly came under criticism for being phallocentric and for pathologizing female sexuality. Contemporary feminist debates once again emphasize the emancipatory potential of psychoanalysis by reading Freud against the grain and interpreting his theories on femininity and sexual development as a radical revelation of the socialization conditions in bourgeois-patriarchal societies. The authors of this volume address this current return of feminism to Freud from various perspectives.
