Jürgen Grieser demonstrates how death, from childhood onwards, significantly contributes to our psychological development throughout the entire span of life and represents an existential challenge that serves as a fundamental drive for shaping and further developing the human psyche. Grieser specifically highlights a largely overlooked area in developmental psychology and psychoanalysis: Despite the fact that death constantly accompanies humanity and the confrontation with death has been the origin of philosophy and religion, psychology and psychoanalysis seem to want to engage with it as little as possible. Based on a broad overview of the manifestations of death throughout life, Grieser presents strategies that individuals can develop to constructively cope with the awareness of their mortality: mobilization of libido.
