Product details

Politics and sexuality have always been closely linked. Debates about sexual morality in 20th-century Germany also served to negotiate political processes, particularly in relation to guilt and memory in the post-war period. Dagmar Herzog highlights the central importance of sexuality for understanding historical developments. She traces the sexual history of Germany from the time of National Socialism through the rigid Adenauer era, the upheaval of the 1968 movement, and the real socialist GDR, up to reunification, showing how sexuality, morality, and memory are intertwined. In doing so, she challenges certain assumptions about the National Socialist period, which was not nearly as hostile to pleasure and sexuality as is often portrayed.
