Death is the great unknown in human life. However, people also experience times of extreme uncertainty as a significant challenge. But how can one cope with it and even live well? Dieter Funke demonstrates that, alongside personal and family relationships, the question of the greater meaning of such crises offers a way to regain inner security. Thus, the author embarks on a quest for the inner safe space as protection against the unknown. The inner soul space, as a safe refuge in times of loss and threat, develops in childhood through the successful management of fundamental uncertainties that a newborn is already exposed to at the beginning of life. If a person develops both a personal and a spiritual perspective, the inner psychological space is expanded into a transpersonal space, creating a connection to the encompassing whole. For dealing with the unknown, being situated in both spaces is a healing experience. Only those who allow uncertainty and grief can cope with them and develop a personal perspective on transience and death as an inner object.
