Since the intense debates of the 1970s and 80s in the field of materialist disability pedagogy, the political dimension of special education has largely receded into the background. Only in recent years has a discourse on justice issues in the context of disability begun to emerge again. This emphasis on political questions means understanding special education not merely as a specialized segment of the education and social system with a pedagogical or rehabilitative mandate. Rather, it must be viewed as a societal institution whose central areas of responsibility should be expanded to include culturally broader dimensions and perspectives.
