Anorexia presents itself as a multifaceted disease process, where social, psychological, family dynamic, and somatic influences interact with one another. In psychotherapeutic treatment, all these levels must be taken into account. Günter Reich and Antje von Boetticher provide a detailed description of psychodynamic and family therapy approaches, incorporating the often severe impacts of the somatic level into the therapeutic concept. Anorexia is understood as a struggle to maintain the boundaries of the subject against the outside world and one's own body.
