Parents of young children are confronted with a variety of questions regarding upbringing. On one hand, children need boundaries; on the other hand, they should grow up happy and free. And of course, they should cry little to not at all, sleep peacefully in their own beds, and joyfully attend early childhood care to promote their social and cognitive development. However, what children actually need has been little studied in a systematic way. Parenting is too heavily influenced by ideology, and a child is expected to conform to the prevailing educational principles.
