Mathias Hirsch examines love both within and outside of psychotherapy and presents the spectrum of different forms of love in therapy. He emphasizes the ambivalence that is always associated with love: alongside the longed-for happiness, there is the fear of dependence on the power of the other, the loss of individuality in merging, and the fear of separation. The author highlights how the phenomenon of love once gave rise to psychoanalysis and shows that transference love remains a powerful driving force in therapy to this day. Furthermore, he addresses the largely tabooed issue of sexual relationships in therapy, which can destroy the analytical space: it is always a narcissistic abuse of power and an abuse of the childlike love in transference. The author illustrates his reflections vividly with clinical case examples.
