Maren Holmes examines the life and work of the psychoanalyst Paula Heimann (1899-1982), who emigrated during the National Socialist era, and explores the role she played in the re-establishment of psychoanalysis in Germany after World War II. The focus is on the professional engagement of German psychoanalysis with the teacher Paula Heimann and her work, as well as the personal engagement of German psychoanalysts with the Jewish emigrant and the confrontation with the history of their own profession during National Socialism. Holmes reconstructs Heimann's career, her emigration biography, and her encounters with the psychoanalytic scientific community after her return to Germany.
