The human psyche contains aspects that it does not know and does not want to know. It shuts its eyes to the consequences of its own actions and to the influences of the past. Resistance, defense, and repression are the key terms that psychologically describe this riddle. In the present study, the foundational works of Sigmund Freud are complemented by the individual psychological and existential analytical developments of Alfred Adler and Medard Boss. Thus, the author develops a modern and practical understanding of repression, denial, and forgetting. As ways out of the harmful self-limitations, he sees openness and authenticity. The book is aimed at psychotherapists from psychoanalytic, depth psychological, and humanistic schools, but due to the general relevance of the topic, it is suitable for a broader audience.
