Since the founding of the People's Republic in 1949 and especially after the end of the Cultural Revolution in 1976, China has experienced dramatic upheavals in all areas of life. The traumatic consequences of these events are still felt today, and the demand for psychotherapy is significant. The absence of a native psychotherapeutic tradition has prompted Western psychotherapists to engage locally in training and education. Among them is Antje Haag, who reflects on her experiences in this volume against the backdrop of the Chinese way of life: a society traditionally shaped by Confucianism, currently facing the challenges of a modern economy. The author discusses the extent to which a Western, individual-oriented form of therapy like psychoanalysis is possible in such a culture.
