Product details

Victim identity, vengefulness, and the culture of forgiveness are closely related. When one's own suffering, identity, and corresponding victim role are exaggerated, it often leads to the denial of others' suffering and to self-justification of one's own misconduct, resulting in a complete absence of empathy. Fear, aggression, and moral outrage can sometimes cause vengeful desires to be expressed in destructive ways. Any possibility of reconciliation then seems illusory. With numerous examples from group-analytic and psychoanalytic practice, the authors demonstrate how liberation from destructive feelings of vengefulness, aggression, and guilt can be achieved, and how pathways to reconciliation can be paved. The result is an intriguing social study that reveals much about the mutual influence of psyche and society.
