Product details

More than 22,000 Protestant citizens of the Salzburg ecclesiastical state lost their homeland due to the imperial emigration patent issued by Archbishop Firmian of Salzburg in 1731. Only a small group was willing to relocate to America. In several transports, the Salzburgers initially became stateless as they traveled through Germany. The donations and the hospitality of the local population towards the displaced were indescribably generous. All of Europe shared in the fate of the Salzburgers. Through letters, diaries, and other historical sources, the book traces the journey of the Protestants expelled from Salzburg and the establishment of their new lives in America, where they built their town "Eben-Ezer" on the Savannah River, enduring great personal sacrifices to find a lasting home.
