The truth was not important to Lola Montez. She lived in the here and now, adapting her life to the current circumstances and constantly reinventing herself on the stage of her life. To do this, she created a fitting biography for herself: the wild child in India became the Spanish dancer, and the Spanish noble offspring transformed into the genuine Countess Landsfeld. At one point, she was the favorite of King Ludwig I, and at another, she was the famous artist. Three times, Lola Montez sought refuge in the supposedly safe harbor of marriage, only to soon display a level of independence that was characteristic of the blue stockings of women's emancipation at the time. The native Irishwoman possessed an unbridled temperament: to some, she was seen as an aggressive egotist, while to others, she was a charming eccentric. Well-traveled and world-famous, she ultimately died in 1861 in New York.
