Product details

If Tilman Riemenschneider had not sided with the rebels as a councilor in Würzburg during the Peasants' War of 1525, his life as a sought-after and wealthy artist would have continued to be glorious. However, with the defeat of the peasant army, he was at the mercy of the prince-bishop. Despite imprisonment, presumed torture, and the loss of parts of his fortune, Riemenschneider survived, but he would no longer receive commissions from the establishment. Thus, he fell into obscurity, and it was only the accidental discovery of his tombstone in 1822 that led to the rediscovery of the master of all masters, as the writer Max von der Grün referred to him. The biography depicts his life and work, as well as the lasting impact of his art.
