In the western part of the northern Harz fringe and its foothills (better known as the "classic square mile of geology"), one can find a wealth of rocks from the Paleozoic era to the most recent deposits in a very small area, unlike almost anywhere else in Central Europe. Due to tectonic shifts, the region between Salzgitter, Goslar, and Wernigerode still provides access to rocks from the Bunter sandstone, Muschelkalk, Keuper, Jurassic, Upper and Lower Cretaceous, as well as Paleozoic rocks with their once-exploited ore deposits. The excursion area is located in the heart of the UNESCO Global Geopark Harz · Braunschweiger Land · Ostfalen, and among its additional highlights are the UNESCO-recognized World Heritage sites of the old town of Goslar and the Rammelsberg Mining Museum, along with the numerous salt domes that structure the pre-Harz landscape.
