Product details

The photographs depicted in this volume were lost for decades in the depths of the Lubyanka, the headquarters of the secret police in the heart of Moscow. They are police photos from interrogation files of individuals who were arrested, convicted, and executed during Stalin's reign of terror from the late 1920s until his death in 1953, due to false accusations. These ordinary citizens represent millions of innocents who fell victim to Stalin's killing machine. Engineers, artists, factory workers, teachers, housewives, heroes of the Soviet Union, even agents of the secret police themselves: no one was safe from persecution. Each photo is accompanied by general biographical information about the individual and the charges brought against them. Unlike Western police photos, these images were taken in natural light with a longer exposure time.
