Rachel is approaching 40, the mother of a 16-year-old son, and has been married to suburban rabbi Seymour Sonnshein for 20 years. She loves baseball, dresses flamboyantly, and does not keep her unorthodox views a secret. Instead of dedicating herself to the duties of a rabbi's wife, she much prefers to spend her time in her studio, continuing her interrupted career as an artist. This does not align with the community members' expectations of a proper rebbetzin. Intrigues and disputes within the community, along with other crises, disrupt the Sonnshein family's life. Silvia Tennenbaum, born in Frankfurt am Main in 1928, was the wife of a rabbi for over 30 years. In her autobiographically tinted novel, Tennenbaum humorously and ironically portrays a Jewish community in suburban America.
