Product details

Grete Sultan (1906-2005) was one of the most unusual pianists of the 20th century. Growing up in the Jewish bourgeoisie of Berlin, she became a celebrated interpreter of both classical and contemporary music in the 1920s. After facing a professional ban and increasing threats, she managed to escape at the last minute in 1941. In New York, she established herself as a pianist and piano teacher. She became a friend and muse of John Cage, whose Etudes Australes she performed around the world. Moritz von Bredow narrates the long life of Grete Sultan, marked by trauma and success: a German-Jewish fate and a reflection of the music and historical events of the 20th century. Moritz von Bredow works as a pediatrician and author in Hamburg. His personal encounters with Grete Sultan and years of research led to this impressive documentation of a unique artist.
