Growing up in the Jewish bourgeoisie of Berlin, she became a celebrated interpreter of both classical and contemporary music in the 1920s. After facing a professional ban and increasing threats, she managed to escape at the last minute in 1941. In New York, she established herself as a pianist and piano teacher. She became a friend and muse of John Cage, whose Etudes Australes she performed around the world.
