Originating from France, the gendarmerie established itself in many European countries, including Austria. Particularly between 1945 and 1960, the organization of the gendarmerie represented a cornerstone in the history of the state of Carinthia. As an executive body, it served to enforce the laws, which are fundamental for societal functioning. The focus of this work lies in the question of how the gendarmerie developed legally and organizationally from 1945 to 1960, after the National Socialists eliminated the system that had prevailed until 1938 and replaced it with the German Ordnungspolizei and the Schutzpolizei. The aim is to examine the restoration of the old order, the reactivation of legal foundations, the reconstruction and organization of the posts, as well as the recruitment of officials.
