Tommaso Campanella's 'City of the Sun' is considered one of the classic utopias of modern times, alongside Thomas More's 'Utopia' and Francis Bacon's 'New Atlantis'. This is the first translation based on the original Italian version 'La Città del Sole' from 1602. Campanella wrote it under the impression of the failed revolt against Spanish rule in Southern Italy, which resulted in nearly 27 years of imprisonment for him. The republic described within serves as an idealized counterpoint to the real world.
