Tibullus (54–19/18 BC) forms, along with Propertius and Ovid, the triad of Roman elegists. In his conscious simplicity, Tibullus is close to the eclogues of Virgil. He also embraces the typical inversion of traditional gender roles found in elegy – the beloved (Delia) is the mistress – yet he strives for a harmony of mutual feelings. In the end, he fails in this endeavor; his love is unrequited, and the poet suffers. This edition presents the first two books of the Corpus Tibullianum, specifically those for which Tibullus's authorship is secured.
