Nietzsche did not see himself as a mere occasional poet, strictly separate from the philosopher. Rather, as a lyricist, he could particularly highlight the issues of his own speech, the relationship between originality and role, truth and fiction, identity and play. In doing so, he found his own lyrical tone: "Not the heroic high mountains, not the lofty pathos of the ambitious Zarathustra figure, but the impressionistically shimmering light of the sea is what allows Nietzsche to discover his very own tone," writes Mathias Mayer in the afterword to his selected edition, which presents the entirety of lyrical Nietzsche—from the beginnings to texts from his estate.
