Typically, haiku is associated with Zen Buddhism due to its highly concentrated and strict form. However, it would not have become popular poetry in Japan if it were limited to that. Haiku is also vibrant diversity. What Basho and his followers represented in the original form of linked verse was colorful; it encompassed cheerfulness, joy, aging, sorrow, illness, science, love, and harmony with nature, the seasons, and the plant and animal world.
