Boccaccio's "Decameron" (literally: Ten-Day Work), created around 1350, is one of the most significant and widely read works of Italian literature. This collection of novellas served as a model for later authors such as Chaucer, Cervantes, and Rabelais; individual stories were taken up by Shakespeare and Lessing. The present selection includes, in addition to Boccaccio's preface, a total of 15 novellas that reflect the diversity of themes and narrative styles.
