In "Iphigenia in Tauris," Euripides addresses the later fate of his protagonist: Saved by the goddess Artemis, she finds herself as a priestess in the Scythian land of the Taurians. According to the goddess's custom, she is to sacrifice any strangers who come there. However, one day, one of these intruders turns out to be her own brother. Knowledge of the ancient original is essential for engaging with the numerous works in literature, music, and visual arts that are dedicated to the Iphigenia myth: Euripides' work was, not least, an inspiration for Goethe's adaptation of the story.
