With the bourgeois tragedy "Kabale und Liebe," Schiller achieves another great success on stage following "Die Räuber." The study edition demonstrates, by juxtaposing the first print and the Mannheim prompt book (both from 1874), how intensively Schiller worked on the theatrical version to meet the demands of stage and performance duration, as well as the restrictions imposed by etiquette and censorship. It thus provides interesting insights into the stage practices of the time. Twelve copper engravings by Daniel Chodowiecki, the most popular German graphic artist of the 18th century, illustrate the study edition.
