Restoring the old order of the Republic: After Caesar's assassination, Cicero sees his chance. Further bloody conflicts seem inevitable, and so he calls for a fight against Marcus Antonius in 14 speeches, who attempted to take over Caesar's leading position in Rome. Cicero is successful: the Senate declares Antonius an enemy of the state, but shortly thereafter, the tide turns. The "Philippic Speeches" are among Cicero's last works before his assassination by Antonius's henchmen and serve as a striking testament to the civil war period. The editor has selected the most impressive passages from nearly all the speeches for this edition.
