Kleist's famous Amazon drama is preserved in three versions: a manuscript with corrections in the author's own hand, the first printed edition in book form, and an extensive fragment from a magazine publication in "Phöbus." Ironically, the manuscript was not the basis for the print, and both the manuscript and the first book edition are riddled with errors and highly unreliable; the Phöbus fragment appears to be the best - but it contains only a third of the work. In an exemplary study edition with parallel printing of the two complete versions, the fragment, and a detailed commentary, Ulrich Port untangles the complicated relationships.
