Friedrich Schiller's penultimate completed drama "The Bride of Messina or The Hostile Brothers" (premiered in 1803) tells a fictional story about a cursed family whose fate is irrevocably fulfilled. Through the use of musically supported choruses that comment on the action and actively intervene in it, this verse-written tragedy takes on the structure of an ancient tragedy. In the preface "On the Use of the Chorus in Tragedy," Schiller explains his intention to transform the modern mundane world into the old poetic one. The story is a dramatically compelling event set in medieval Messina, reminiscent of antiquity: Don Cesar and Don Manuel love their sister Beatrice, whose true identity is unknown to them. They become embroiled in a fierce confrontation that ends with Don Cesar murdering Don Manuel.
