The fragmentary verse novel "Tristan," which tells the story of the love between the prodigy Tristan and the beautiful Isolde, reads like a psychological thriller: What begins as an affair sparked by the accidental shared consumption of a love potion unfolds into a plot-rich competition between the two lovers and Isolde's suspicious husband, King Mark. Gottfried von Strassburg combines in over 20,000 verses modern counter-proposals to classical Arthurian epic with philosophical interjections on literature, love, and society. The conflict-laden Irish legend has been adapted and reworked many times, including in Richard Wagner's opera "Tristan und Isolde." The edition presented here contains the established version of the Middle High German text along with a translation into Modern High German by Rüdiger Krohn.
