Didier van Cauwelaert's novel, awarded the 'Prix Concourt' in 1994, gives a surprising twist to the often-explored theme of immigration in French literature: the young Aziz, deported after a police raid, flies to his supposed homeland of Morocco with an integration officer. There, the roles are reversed: the protégé becomes the caretaker, and the caretaker's life falls apart.
