Writings on Dramatic Theory

Summary:
This volume gathers Schiller's most important writings on dramatic theory, including "What Can a Good Permanent Theater Actually Achieve?", "On the Pathetic", "On the Sublime", "On Epic and Dramatic Poetry", and "On the Use of the Chorus in Tragedy". A line-by-line commentary explains difficult passages, and an afterword addresses not only the vexing question of Schiller's relevance, which is always a matter of personal taste, but also the historical conditions, dramaturgical possibilities, and epochal limits of Schiller's dramatic theory, according to the editor.

Authors: Schiller, Friedrich; Berghahn, Klaus L. (ed.)
About the Author:
Friedrich Schiller (since 1802: von; November 10, 1759, Marbach am Neckar - May 9, 1805, Weimar) forms, along with Goethe, the core of Weimar Classicism, the most significant period of German literature. Schiller began as a sensational Sturm und Drang poet and shaped the famous classical Weimar decade as a publicist, theorist, dramatist, and lyricist from 1795 onwards. Schiller's plays remain among the most performed in German literature today, and his poems, such as the ballads, were part of the fixed cultural canon of German literature in the 19th century and beyond.
