Ted Conkaffey, a former cop wrongfully suspected of abducting a 13-year-old girl, cannot escape his past. Dale Bingley, the father of his alleged victim, shows up at Ted's northern Australian refuge, Crimson Lake. He wants to investigate the crime against his daughter and seek revenge on his own. The powerful gangster Khaled is also interested in finding the real perpetrator and eliminating him for good—a solution that wouldn’t really help Ted, who is trying to prove his innocence. So, he must find the psychopath first, no matter the cost. Meanwhile, his private detective partner, the eccentric Amanda Pharrell, who was once convicted of murder, is occupied with another case: the double homicide of two employees at a notorious bar, which initially appears to be a simple robbery gone wrong. Amanda teams up with Detective Inspector Pi.
