Product details

An unknown chapter of Jewish refugee assistance. In 1933, only about 6,000 Jews lived in Sweden. The government was concerned about the increasing number of German and Austrian Jews seeking asylum in Sweden and issued residence permits only very restrictively. Using the example of neutral and democratic Sweden, Clemens Maier-Wolthausen describes not only the rejecting attitude of many host countries but also examines an administrative practice in which the Jewish Community of Stockholm was involved in the decision-making process regarding the admission of refugees. Based on the nearly completely preserved correspondence of the community, the scope of their actions becomes clear. The author identifies the hurdles faced by German and Austrian Jews when emigrating to Sweden, while also providing insights into the strategies of the refugees.
