The exploration of the Roman period in Regensburg has made significant progress in recent years. The construction boom, which led to a large number of rescue excavations, has brought a wealth of new and unexpected insights. Additionally, numerous older excavations have been scientifically re-evaluated, greatly expanding knowledge of the city's earliest history. As early as the mid-1st century, there was one or possibly even two small forts in the Regensburg area for initial border security along the Danube. In 179, Regensburg became the strongest military fortress of Roman Bavaria. The continuous existence of Regensburg from the Roman period to the present is now secured by numerous archaeological finds, reinforcing its significance for the history of Bavaria during Roman times.
