Especially during the late Middle Ages to the 19th century, they roamed the land—robbers and bandit groups whose names and deeds are still revered in some regions today, remembered in museums, games, and literature. In fact, there were some bandit groups akin to Robin Hood, whose code dictated that they only rob the rich, clergy, and nobles, leaving the poor and their meager possessions alone. However, these were exceptions. This new work demystifies many robbers and bandit groups that, in reality, lurked ruthlessly and brutally on the streets preying on the common folk.
