Product details

Shota Rustaveli's "The Knight in the Panther's Skin," widely recognized as the national epic of Georgia and included in the UNESCO World Heritage List since 2013, is a remarkable work in many respects. Created at the transition from the 12th to the 13th century, approximately 800 years after the beginning of Georgian literacy, it marks a sharp departure from the Christian Orthodox-dominated, essentially theologically oriented literature that had characterized the Old Georgian period up to that point. While Shota Rustaveli's work cannot deny its Christian background, it is also marked by other currents that were present in Georgia at the time: on one hand, a lively engagement with ancient Greek philosophy, often referred to as the "Georgian Renaissance," and on the other hand, the pervasive influence of Persian culture.
