No city in Germany has undergone such a radical transformation in perception due to post-war development as the documenta city. The reconstruction was only partially based on the established urban planning of a long historical city development and instead aimed to implement the idea of a car-friendly city. However, this is precisely what makes Kassel today a prime example of architecture and urban planning from the 1950s and 60s. Additionally, Kassel still boasts significant monuments from all phases of architectural history. The works of numerous important architects such as Paul and Simon Louis du Ry, Heinrich Christoph Jussow, Leo von Klenze, Johann Conrad Bromeis, Theodor Fischer, Hermann Muthesius, Paul Schmitthenner, Heinrich Tessenow, Otto Haesler, Otto Bartning, Sepp Ruf, Gottfried Böhm, and James Stirling are featured in the architectural guide doku.
